Product description
ALKEMIST™ Metal Blackening (Black Oxide/Conversion)
METAL BLACKENING is a specialized chemical conversion process developed by ALKEMIST™ | Water and Chemicals Solutions (SMC-PVT) LIMITED. Unlike traditional paints or platings that sit on top of the metal, this advanced black oxide treatment induces a controlled chemical reaction on the surface of ferrous metals (iron and steel), transforming the top layer into magnetite (Fe3O4). The result is a striking, deep black finish that is physically integrated into the metal itself.
Key Features & Benefits
- Zero Dimensional Change: Because it is a conversion coating rather than an applied layer, it does not alter the dimensions of the treated parts. It is the perfect solution for precision-machined components, threads, and tight-tolerance tooling.
- Enhanced Cosmetic Appeal: Provides a uniform, rich black appearance that instantly upgrades the visual quality and perceived value of manufactured metal goods.
- Anti-Galling Properties: The black oxide finish creates a smoother surface that reduces friction and galling during the break-in period of mating metal parts.
- Reduced Light Glare: Leaves a non-reflective surface, making it ideal for optical instruments, tactical gear, and hand tools used in bright environments.
- Optimal Substrate for Oils: The porous nature of the newly formed black oxide layer acts like a sponge, absorbing rust preventive oils and waxes to deliver exceptional long-term corrosion resistance.
Detailed Application Methodology (How to Use)
Achieving a flawless black oxide finish requires a strict, multi-step surface preparation and treatment process. ALKEMIST™ | Water and Chemicals Solutions (SMC-PVT) LIMITED outlines the following standard procedure for optimal results:
Step 1: Thorough Cleaning and Degreasing
The metal surface must be completely free of oil, grease, shop dirt, and coolants. Immerse the parts in a high-quality alkaline degreaser bath. Any residual oil will act as a barrier, resulting in a patchy or completely failed blackening reaction.
Step 2: Cold Water Rinse
Thoroughly rinse the degreased parts in an overflowing cold water bath to remove all traces of the alkaline cleaner. Do not allow the parts to dry between steps.
Step 3: Acid Pickling / Activation (If Required)
If the metal has surface rust or mill scale, immerse it in a mild acid pickle solution (e.g., dilute hydrochloric acid) for 1 to 5 minutes to strip away the oxidation and activate the bare metal surface. Follow this immediately with another thorough cold water rinse.
Step 4: Blackening Immersion
Submerge the prepared metal parts into the ALKEMIST™ METAL BLACKENING bath. Depending on the specific metal alloy and the type of blackening system used (hot or cold), the immersion time can range from 1 to 15 minutes. Agitate the parts slightly to ensure the chemical reaches all crevices and blind holes. Remove the parts once a uniform, deep black color is achieved.
Step 5: Final Cold Water Rinse
Immediately rinse the blackened parts in cold water to halt the chemical reaction and wash away residual blackening salts or solutions.
Step 6: Sealing and Corrosion Protection (Crucial Step)
Note: Black oxide alone offers very little corrosion resistance. It MUST be sealed immediately after the final rinse. Submerge the wet, blackened parts directly into a water-displacing rust preventive oil (such as ALKEMIST™ R.P.C.-1 Dewatering Fluid). The oil drives out the moisture and penetrates the black oxide structure, permanently locking in the deep color and providing maximum protection against rust.
