3. Composition / Information on Ingredients

Chemical Name CAS Number Weight %
Isopropyl Alcohol 67-63-0 ≥ 99.0%
Water 7732-18-5 ≤ 1.0%

4. First Aid Measures

  • General Advice: Move out of dangerous area. Consult a physician. Show this SDS to the doctor.
  • Inhalation: Move to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. Call a physician if symptoms persist (drowsiness/dizziness).
  • Skin Contact: Wash off with soap and plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing. Seek medical attention if irritation develops. Defatting of skin may occur.
  • Eye Contact: Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids. Consult a physician immediately.
  • Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Rinse mouth with water. Call a physician or poison control center immediately.

5. Firefighting Measures

  • Suitable Extinguishing Media: Alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide (CO2). Water may be ineffective to extinguish fire but should be used to cool fire-exposed containers.
  • Specific Hazards: Highly flammable liquid and vapor. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel a considerable distance to a source of ignition and flash back. Containers may explode when heated.
  • Firefighting Gear: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and full protective gear.

6. Accidental Release Measures

  • Personal Precautions: Use personal protective equipment. Avoid breathing vapors. Ensure adequate ventilation. Remove all sources of ignition. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Vapors can accumulate in low areas.
  • Environmental Precautions: Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Do not let product enter drains, sewers, or waterways.
  • Methods for Cleaning Up: Contain spillage. Absorb with non-combustible absorbent material (e.g., sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite) and place in container for disposal. Use non-sparking tools.

7. Handling and Storage

  • Handling: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of vapor or mist. Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking. Take measures to prevent the buildup of electrostatic charge. Ground and bond containers when transferring material.
  • Storage: Keep container tightly closed in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place. Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Store locked up. Store away from incompatible materials (strong oxidizers).

8. Exposure Controls / Personal Protection

Component Agency Limit (TWA) Limit (STEL)
Isopropyl Alcohol ACGIH TLV 200 ppm 400 ppm
Isopropyl Alcohol OSHA PEL 400 ppm (980 mg/m³) -

Engineering Controls: Provide exhaust ventilation or other engineering controls to keep the airborne concentrations of vapors below their respective threshold limit value. Ensure eyewash stations and safety showers are proximal to the workstation.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

  • Eyes: Face shield and safety glasses. Use equipment for eye protection tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or EN 166(EU).
  • Skin: Handle with gloves. Nitrile rubber or Butyl rubber is recommended. Avoid Latex. Wear flame retardant antistatic protective clothing.
  • Respiratory: Where risk assessment shows air-purifying respirators are appropriate, use a full-face respirator with multi-purpose combination (US) or type ABEK (EN 14387) respirator cartridges as a backup to engineering controls.

9. Physical and Chemical Properties

Appearance: Clear, Colorless Liquid Odor: Alcohol-like, characteristic
pH: Neutral Flash Point: 12°C (53.6°F) - Closed Cup
Boiling Point: 82°C (180°F) Melting Point: -89.5°C (-129°F)
Evaporation Rate: 1.5 (Butyl Acetate = 1) Flammability: Highly Flammable

  • Skin Corrosion/Irritation: May cause mild skin irritation. Prolonged or repeated contact may dry skin and cause irritation.
  • Eye Damage: Causes serious eye irritation. Vapors may also irritate eyes.
  • Inhalation: Inhalation of high vapor concentrations may cause symptoms like headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea and vomiting (narcotic effects).
